Mat 8:5-10, 13 (CSB) When he entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, pleading with him,
Mat 8:6 “Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, in terrible agony.”
Mat 8:7 He said to him, “Am I to come and heal him?”
Mat 8:8 “Lord,” the centurion replied, “I am not worthy to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed.
Mat 8:9 For I too am a man under authority, having soldiers under my command. I say to this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this!’ and he does it.”
Mat 8:10 Hearing this, Jesus was amazed and said to those following him, “Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with so great a faith.
Mat 8:13 Then Jesus told the centurion, “Go. As you have believed, let it be done for you.” And his servant was healed that very moment.
Wow! That is an exciting scripture setting from the Bible.
In this story, we have a “Centurion” (a military officer who was over 100 soldiers). Who was headquartered in Capernaum. Then as fast as word-of-mouth travels, he heard JESUS was coming back home to His ministry headquarters, which at the time was in Capernaum, as well.
This would be an awesome answer to prayers, if Jesus would perform this precious miracle for him. Because, at that very moment the centurion had a servant who was paralyzed, (“Sick and about to die,” as the physician Luke described the situation in his gospel account, Luke 7:7).
However, as Jesus was about to go to the centurion’s home, to heal the servant, the centurion said this to Him. Mat 8:8 “Lord,” the centurion replied, “I am not worthy to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed.
This centurion being a gentile and a Roman solider. Heard enough about Jesus’ teaching and the miraculous events surrounding Him. That it led him to believe Jesus had authority over sickness, disease, and even death. So, in believing this, he said all you need to do Jesus, is just say the word!
Consequently, certain of the Jewish people just talked about the things Jesus said and did. Still others didn’t believe in Him, as the Christ and Messiah. However, the Centurion with his understanding of authority believed Jesus’ words to be true. (Although, he might have been puzzled over the fact, that something like sickness and disease…somehow had an ear, and it was subject not only hear but it must also obey His words!)
Still, either personally or by witnesses, he heard and saw sickness and disease vacate people’s bodies, after Jesus spoke to them. In knowing this his mind was made up! He knew Jesus MUST have had a kind of authority that no one else could even come close to.
Therefore, for him, all Jesus needed to do was just say the word, and his servant would be healed.
Oh, Praise the Lord, my friends! We need to be able to take Jesus at His Word, like the centurion did. Just say the Word Lord, and it will happen.
But Jesus isn’t seen physically everywhere today. That is, going around so all can see Him in this “Natural physical realm” of flesh and blood.
So then, is there any hope for us to receive like they did during the times of Jesus earthly ministry?
Absolutely, yes!
Notice, what Jesus did after His resurrection from the dead. He appeared to the disciples and said this…Mat 28:18-20 (CSB) Jesus came near and said to them, “All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth.
Mat 28:19 Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
Mat 28:20 teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
We therefore have the same authority given to us that Jesus gave to the disciples. Because He said, He would always be with us, to the end of the age.
You may say, “Yeah He only gave that to the disciples”, because that was who He was taking to. Therefore, when they died, this particular type of Jesus authority went with them.
But let’s not be so fast in judging the loss of this type of authority. For if we look at the rest of the verse, then we will clearly see that it was passed on to every believer until the end of the “Age”.
So, has this particular “Age” ended? No! It has not ended yet!
How do we know this? Because the “End of the age” goes well beyond the time of the disciples. How do we know this? Well, I’m glad you asked.
In Matthew 24:3 Jesus was asked by His disciples when He would be coming back to the earth and what would be the sign of “The end of the age?” Look at it here now. Mat 24:3 (CSB) While he was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples approached him privately and said, “Tell us, when will these things happen? And what is the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?”
He then proceeded to tell them all the things that would take place before the “End of the age and the sign of His coming.” See, Matthew 24:3-51.
This is shouting territory my friends! Because it means there is hope for us to be healed, delivered, and set free from everything, which comes against us.
But in order for us to be delivered we must operate like Jesus did. Then we can use the keys to the kingdom, like He did.
Take a look at this portion of scripture and see how important it is for us to use our words like Jesus used His. Mark 11:23 (MKJV) For truly I say to you that whoever shall say to this mountain, Be moved and be cast into the sea, and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that what he said shall occur, he shall have whatever he said.
Mrk 11:24 Therefore I say to you, All things, whatever you ask, praying, (If you are asking and praying then you are saying or speaking) believe that you shall receive them, and it will be to you.
My friends, we need to say or speak the Word of God over our lives, bodies, jobs, and relationships. We need to speak or say things in line with His Word in every situation we face. Then, we can operate in the authority given to us by Jesus Christ.
We will continue this lesson in “Part 2” on our next post.
