Teaching follows…
There are many prophecies in the Old Testament concerning the coming of the Messiah! One of those prophecies say, He will be a person who strikes wonder. It is found in the book of Isaiah.
Isa 9:6 (LITV) [The Literal Translation/Version of the Bible] says… For a Child is born; to us a Son is given; and the government is on His shoulder; and His name is called Wonderful, Counselor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
The first statement of this verse seems rather normal in this passage…For a Child is born; Other translations state it like this…i.e. (MKJV) For to us a Child is born, or the (KJV) For unto us a child is born,. All of these say the same thing but with a little different glimpse into the nature of this “Child”.
We know from other prophecies that this “Child” would be born from a virgin. Isa 7:14 (KJV) Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
BDB (Brown-Driver-Briggs) Definition: Immanuel = “God with us” or “with us is God” 1) symbolic and prophetic name of the Messiah, the Christ, prophesying that He would be born of a virgin and would be ‘God with us’ …Children are born everyday! So, what makes this birth something special?
(Imagine holding a cut diamond. Slowly turn it and allow the light to reflect off of the different cuts or facets in the stone. Look at it’s brilliance! Every turn of the diamond reveals something you never knew or had ever seen before!)
This my friends, is exactly how and why the different translations start off this verse slightly different. Now it’s the same meaning, but with a different ray of light or knowledge being imparted.
The (LITV)…For a Child is born; notice “Child” is capitalized! This denotes a proper Child. One of nobility! One who was promised and we waited for.
The (MKJV)…For to us a Child is born, We note here; the same careful thought process is carried by the Holy Spirit to and through the translators about His nobility. But now we see something different! Not only is the “Child” going to be born! But He will be towards us, or His life will be in front of our eyes to see.
Finally, in our short list of 3 examples we see the (KJV) states it like this… For unto us a child is born, Whereas, the (MKJV) states …For to us… which easily could just mean to the “Hebrew” nation or the “Jewish” people. Thereby, leaving the rest of us to watch this “Child” but not commune with Him.
But PTL! The (KJV) states it like this… For unto us a child is born, Please note; the word “child” is not capitalized here. This is not a demeaning or downplaying of His nobility! Instead, the translators here by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, showed us His down to earth, gentleness and meekness. He would be born “Unto us“! Not to live a self-serving life, but One that would affect all of us. Not to the Jews only, but to the whole world! Oh Hallelujah! “Somebody stand and and praise Him if you can!
OK, let’s continue on. Otherwise, we will never get through this verse of scripture…next portion; to us a Son is given; Oh my goodness gracious! We could stay here all night, (so to speak)! You see this child who was to be born, would be 100% man, For unto us a child is born. Otherwise, He could not take our place on the cross, as our substitute! But He was also, 100% God! As God the Son, who had been with the Father, through-out all of eternity. He could not be born, since He already existed! Instead, He (His God-side) had to be given!
This is why Jesus so eloquently, stated the Love of His Father in the most well-known scripture-verse in the world. John 3:16 (KJV) For God so loved the world, that he [God the Father] gave his only begotten Son, [Jesus] that whosoever believeth in him [Jesus Christ, the Son of God] should not perish, but have everlasting life.
My friends, on the human-side He could be born. But on His God-side, He could only be given! Oh, Hallelujah!
OK and only for the sake of time and space in this blog, I want to look at one more portion of this scripture. The rest of it goes like this…and the government is on His shoulder; and His name is called Wonderful, Counselor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
There is so much here! But let’s take a look at this section…His name is called Wonderful When we read this today, we don’t really read it like it was written to be understood and it’s because we have somewhat watered down this meaning. We can see from our Hebrew Word Study it is… פֶּלֶא pele’: pronounced= peh’-leh. It’s a masculine noun meaning a wonder, a miracle, a marvel. This word is used to represent something unusual or extraordinary.
If we stop to think about this for just a moment! This is exactly how Jesus operated here on the earth, as a Child who was born and a Son who was given.
He turned water into wine, instantly! Those at the wedding feast said it was the best wine of the evening! He healed the sick from ALL kinds of sicknesses and diseases! He touched the leper, who no doubt had not felt another humans touch in a long time and instead of the leper giving Jesus, his leprosy. Jesus gave him what He had and that was a miracle-working, healing touch of divine power that healed him completely!
Jesus Christ cast out the devils/demons from people and would not allow them to tell people who He was. Oh, they were familiar with Him, because they knew Him from since the time, they had came into existence.
Even the earth, the wind, and the waves were subject unto Him and had to immediately obey His commands! An example of this is when the seas roared, the wind blew, and would’ve “no doubt” capsized the boat He was in. That was, until He stood up and spoke 3 words, “Peace be still”! This definitely made those who were around Him say, who is this Jesus as they stared in amazement and thought, Mark 4:39-41.
My friends, Jesus Christ, the Living Son of the Most-High God is Wonderful! He strikes “Wonder” and amazement in the hearts and minds of those who say “Yes” to Him.
