Luke 8:22-25 (KJV) Now it came to pass on a certain day, that he (Jesus) went into a ship with his disciples: and he said unto them, Let us go over unto the other side of the lake. And they launched forth.
Luk 8:23 But as they sailed he fell asleep: and there came down a storm of wind on the lake; and they were filled with water, and were in jeopardy.
Luk 8:24 And they came to him, and awoke him, saying, Master, master, we perish. Then he arose, and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water: and they ceased, and there was a calm.
Luk 8:25 And he said unto them, Where is your faith? And they being afraid wondered, saying one to another, What manner of man is this! for he commandeth even the winds and water, and they obey him.
Oh my goodness gracious, my friends! There is so much in these 4 verses of scripture. First off, Let’s briefly catch you up, (if you are not familiar with the story).
Jesus had been ministering to a multitude of people. He obviously was now very tired, (physically speaking). Because after He told the disciples to get into the boat and go to the other side, He fell asleep, vs. 23.
While He was sleeping, there came a “Storm of wind” or a “Very sudden storm with lots of wind”. The Greek word for “Storm“ in this verse is the word, λαῖλαψ, pronounced = lah’ee-laps. According to Thayer’s Definition: it is a feminine noun, which means…
1) a whirlwind, a tempestuous wind
2) a violent attack of wind, a squall
2a) it’s never a single gust nor a steady blowing wind, however violent, but a storm breaking forth from black thunder clouds in furious gusts, with floods of rain, and throwing everything topsy-turvy.
It was a violent storm, being so driven by the wind that “The waves were about to completely over-take the boat”, as seen from Matthew’s account in Matthew 8:24. Also, in Mark 4:37 we see the waves had pounded the boat so hard that is was now “Full of water”!
So, when the disciples woke Jesus up and said, “We are perishing!” It appears they did it as a last ditch-effort, in their mind! For up until this point, it was all by their own labor and expertise! Especially, as trained, professional, fishermen, (which a lot of them were)! They had no doubt, seen their share of storms, on this body of water before. But in this case, it was to no avail! They were perishing!
Now their pride was swallowed! They were not going to get the “Master” across the sea safely, on their own. So, they woke Him up and said, “We are going to die!”
But they forgot who they had in the boat with them! It was Jesus Christ, the Son of the Living God!
My friends, when we have Jesus in the boat with us, then we win! No matter how the situation looks in the natural! We are more than conquerors in Christ Jesus!
The same One who stood up in the boat on that day and said, “Peace be still”, Mark 4:39. Is the same Lord today!
He is only a prayer or a whisper away! We can call on Him from the quiet of our home or in a busy subway station. It doesn’t matter were we are, He is already – right there with us. He is in the boat with us, and we are going over to the other side!
The Bible says, He will never leave us or forsake us, Hebrews 13:5.
So, we have to make a decision and say, “This is the day the Lord has made and we will rejoice and be glad in it”, Psalm 118:24. No matter how it starts or ends! The devil and the demonic forces in hell don’t dictate the actions of my God! Instead, they must bow their knee to Him!
He is the Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace, The Mighty God, The One who was, is, and is to come! He is The Almighty God, in heaven and in the earth! Oh hallelujah!
My friends, whatever your need is today. Just call on the Lord, for He is ready to hear your hearts cry out to Him! He is our Need-Meeter!
