In our last post with this question. We looked at the scriptural setting from Luke’s gospel. The one which contained the question from John the Baptists’ disciples. Luke 7:20 (CSB) When the men (disciples of John) reached him (Jesus), they said, “John the Baptist sent us to ask you, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?’”
Then we see in verse 22 He (Jesus) replied to them, “Go and report to John what you have seen and heard: The blind receive their sight, the lame walk, those with leprosy are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor are told the good news,
My goodness, brothers and sisters! What other proof do we or they need? Jesus and John both knew the scripture which says, But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings; Malachi 4:2a. (With the Lord God, being used metaphorically in this scripture as the “Sun” (notice “Sun” is capitalized speaking of the deity and not just the star which shines light on the earth.) …so therefore, the Sun of righteousness.
We also see, “Wings” in the same scripture, which is also known as the “Hem” of his garment. The “Hem” of His garment consisted of the tassels (tzitzit) on the prayer shawl that the rabbi’s and worshipers wore.
My friends! We are about to see this scripture come alive to us and it will point straight to the Messiah. Because when the “Sun” of righteousness comes there will be healing in His wings or the border/Hem of His garment. In this case specifically, the Hem, fringe or tzitzit of His garment was on the Prayer Shaw.
Look with me at this story from Matthew’s gospel. Matthew 9:20-22.
Mat 9:20-22 (MKJV) And behold, a woman, who had a flow of blood for twelve years, came up behind Him and touched the hem of His garment.
Mat 9:21 For she said within herself, If only I shall touch His robe (Hem/fringes, border of His garment), I will be whole.
Mat 9:22 But turning and seeing her, Jesus said, Daughter, be comforted; your faith has saved you. And the woman was saved from that hour.
Oh my gosh, there is so much in this verse of scripture to uncover. In doing so, we can see why this lady touching the “Hem” of His garment was healed and why everyone else touching His “Hem” on this day, was not.
First off, this lady was a Jew, who had no doubt heard of all the miraculous things Jesus had done for everyone else who came to Him. No doubt, she was also very informed concerning the scriptures which pointed to the coming Messiah.
Based on what she knew concerning Jesus. She had already accepted Him as the Messiah who had come and was now present on the earth.
Plain and simple, she obviously knew the scripture from Malachi, as well. For she said, (verse 21) within herself. Thoughts along these lines…Since I believe He is the messiah, if I can only touch the “Hem” of His garment, I will be made whole. Because the Messiah, when He comes will have healing in His wings, also known as, fringes or hem of His garment.
So, if He is who He says He is, and who I believe He is, then He doesn’t need to touch me to heal me. I just need to touch Him, (His wings), that is, the “Hem” on His garment and I will be made whole.
Oh hallelujah! My friends, she was correct! She touched the “Hem” of His garment and she was made whole!
Just think there was a multitude of people around and following Jesus. No doubt, others touched Him, as everyone wanted to get up close to the Master.
Then all of a sudden… Jesus turned around and asked the question. “Who touched Me?”
When we look at Mark’s gospel, we can see this part of the story and the disciples comment on Jesus’ question, as well.
Mark 5:30-34 (CSB) Immediately Jesus realized that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and said, “Who touched my clothes?”
Mrk 5:31 His disciples said to him, “You see the crowd pressing against you, and yet you say, ‘Who touched me?’”
Mrk 5:32 But he was looking around to see who had done this.
Mrk 5:33 The woman, with fear and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before him, and told him the whole truth.
Mrk 5:34 “Daughter,” he said to her, “your faith has saved you. Go in peace and be healed from your affliction.”
Notice, the healing virtue did not leave Him when the others touched Him on this day and time. But it did when she touched Him and the reason why was very clear. For once Jesus heard her story and saw her faith. He announced to her, (obviously, those standing around them heard it to.)
Mark 5:34 (CSB) “Daughter,” … “your faith has saved you. Go in peace and be healed from your affliction.”
This was culmination of the miracle the lady believed for. However, she got even more than what she came for.
She believed that Jesus Christ was the Messiah with “Healing in His wings.” Then she set out to attain the undeniable evidence for herself and her family. Because if He was indeed who He said He was, the Son of the Most High God. He would have healing in His wings, (hem/garment/clothes).
In order to prove this, she just needed to reach Him and touch His “Hem”. She didn’t need Him to pray for her or take time out of His busy schedule. Just touch the “Hem” she said, and I’ll be clean, healed, and whole.
But it was even better than that! Look with me at Jesus’ words to her again. He said, “Daughter,” (Calming and caring word from the Master, “Daughter”) … “your faith has saved you. Go in peace and be healed from your affliction.”
The word for saved here is the Greek word, “Sozo”. Which means saved from sickness and disease, but also can be used in spiritual salvation. Then He tells her to Go in peace. Or really, “Go into peace”. Walk with peace being your guide and be healed from your plague/affliction. Because that which used to scourge you, whip you, and beat-up on you, is now gone.
Oh, Praise the Lord!
My friends, when we accept Jesus Christ as the Messiah, the Son of the Living-God. He immediately changes us on the inside. Our spirit-man is born-again and we are saved from the damnation of hell’s fire.
But even more than that! We can stand on His Word and accept Him as our healer, our provision, our protection, and our peace. He can put us back together in the places we have fallen apart.
Today we can’t touch the physical “Hem” of His garment, But we have His Word to stand on and the blessings in it, which we can believe for. He is still the loving Savior, who wants to save, heal, provide for, and protect us.
So, Is Jesus the ONE? Yes He is and there is none other like Him.
